Who Is A Journeyman Electrician?A journeyman electrician is the first license that you get to work independently as an electrician. Until you get this certification, you will have to work either under another journeyman or under the supervision of a master electrician. You will be part of a group of electricians or a contracting company. Once you become a journeyman electrician you will be able to supervise others, up to a maximum of three unlicensed people working under you. How will get this license? You will have to follow the rules laid down for the purpose. There could be subtle differences between the ways the states have designed their rules. But more or less they all amount to the same. You might have to go through an apprenticeship and of course, take a journeyman exam before you can get the journeyman electrician license. The process is pretty simple. The basic eligibility criteria that you need to satisfy are: you need to be a Grade 12 secondary school diploma certificate holder. Secondly, you need to have a verifiable four year apprenticeship with any of the master electricians licensed by the state. When you are applying for the journeyman electrician license, you will find that the state concerned insists on all of the above indicated information. There should be letters of verification confirming that you have undergone four years of apprenticeship with any of the Master electricians along with the other qualifying information along with your application. Your application if found fit, you will be sent the information about the date and time of your exam. This exam you will have to give at the specified location. If you are not eligible to take the exam then also you are intimated along with a reason for the disapproval of your application. You may of course, appeal against the decision to the board of Electrical Examiners present in every state. Depending upon your case the judgments will be forth coming. Based on your exam performance, your score will be sent to you indicating whether you are eligible for a license or not. If you have got the score that is accepted by the board, then you can apply separately for the license along with the score that you have got in the exam. You will get your journeyman electrician license within two weeks from the date of application. You will also be given an ID card along with the license. You need to have this ID card all through your work and you may be checked or verified at any point in time. It is important therefore, that you carry it whenever and where ever you work. Remember every license issued is valid for two years only. You need to renew your license if you want to continue as a journeyman electrician. That would require you to apply again for renewal even six months before expiration. |
